Winter Veggie CSA
What: A weekly share of our farm's organically grown veggies plus the chance to get some farm experience.
When: Timed to coincide with the start of school term, our first portion of the Winter CSA will run from September to December approximately 13 weeks (we won't do deliveries during reading week or holidays, unless you want!). If we still have lots of veggies left and if there is a demand we will certainly look into doing a second term Share as well.
Note: Even though this CSA is geared towards Augustana students other community members can join too!
Where: Delivered directly to Augustana once a week. You will be able to pick up your veggies on Tuesdays from 4PM-6PM each week near the Chapel. Our drop off is timed to coincide with the Chaplaincies weekly soup supper.
Why: Community Supported Agriculture is a great way to get connected to the land your food comes from and the people who grew it. You will be supporting a local family farm and receiving delicious vegetables that will be practically delivered to your door.
How: Sign up by filling out the Winter Veggie CSA Registration Form
Why do we offer a winter share but no summer share?
This summer is going to be busy for us! We have lots of projects planned and we would be unable to keep up with a summer CSA. However we feel that by focusing on later season crops that store well we can get some important work done first thing in the spring/summer and then by the time late summer/fall rolls around we will have more time to focus on the Share. It just so happens this coincides with the return of students to Augustana, so we thought we would gear our program towards their schedule and be able to offer the next bright generation healthy food to fuel their active minds and bodies!
How does it work?
The Winter Share will follow each students personal schedule. By giving you the option to select which weeks you will need a delivery we can make sure you aren't paying for food you won't be around to eat! Of course you could always take your veggies home on reading week to share with your family! When you sign up for the Winter Share we will simply ask that you submit your desired delivery dates along with your order and we will take care of the rest.
Then, every week you previously stated, you will have a box of vegetables delivered to a central location at the Augustana. Then you simply take your veggies home, rinse them up and you are all set. As a note: most of the veggies in your weekly box will not be pre-washed. This is because:
- It keeps our labour costs down so the share is more affordable.
- We would recommend you wash your vegetables again anyways so this just saves precious water.
- There are actually beneficial coatings on most vegetables and by not washing them until as late as possible means you get fresher healthier vegetables!
- And most importantly its good to EAT DIRT! Research has shown that by eating produce that still contains traces of HEALTHY soil, you actually inoculate your stomach we beneficial bacteria that contribute to a myriad of health benefits. Check out this article to find out more! Think of it as getting a probiotic at no charge ;)
In addition to getting veggies you will also get a chance to come participate in the harvest. Weather and your schedule permitting, we will organize several work share days that will allow you to get your hands dirty in the soil your food comes from. In return for your efforts you will gain practical experience, a deeper connection and understanding of your food as well as getting a tour of a practicing Permaculture farm!
How big are the shares? And how much does it cost?
We want to give you good value without overwhelming you with more veggies than you want. Believe it or not, the number one reason people drop out of CSA shares is because they receive too much food. We want to find the right balance between value and quantity. Luckily, with a winter share, most of the food keeps well beyond a week, so what you can’t eat one week, you can make up for in future weeks or a lot of the food can be juiced, pickled (beets!), frozen, or fermented (sauerkraut! kim chi!).
The Single Share- is enough for one veggie loving student. It will include approximately: 1 lb potatoes, 1 lb carrots, ½ lb onions, and 2-4 other items per week. Things like: garlic, shallots, beets, winter/summer squash, parsnips, cabbage, tomatoes, radishes fresh or dried herbs etc.
Cost: $15/week (Typical 13 week term is $195)
The Double Share- is enough for 2 veggie-loving students. It will include approximately 2 lbs potatoes, 2 lbs carrots, 1-1½ lbs onions, and 3-5 other items per week. Things like: garlic, shallots, beets, winter/summer squash, parsnips, cabbage, tomatoes, radishes, fresh or dried herbs etc.
Cost: $25/week (Typical 13 week term is $325)

How to sign up?
We are asking for a $20 dollar deposit due by May, 15 which will allow us to know how many seeds to plant. Then once you figure out which weeks you would like deliveries, submit your order dates with 50% of the total value by July, 15. The balance is due when you receive the first share in September. Of course, we can take full payment in advance, but we think 50% when we are growing the food and 50% when you begin receiving it is a good balance. This way we can be certain our vegetables have hungry mouths to go to and that we can help cover the costs of planting, tending and harvest the produce before it gets to you. Here is an example of a payment schedule might take place:
- By May, 15: Pay $20 deposit
- By July, 15: Pay 50% percent of your total order e.g. 13 weeks x $15 x 50% = $97.50
- By First Delivery (September): Pay the remaining 50% e.g. 13 weeks x $15 x 50%= $97.50
- Enjoy Fresh Veggies!
- Last Delivery (December): We will return the original $20 dollar deposit after all delivery boxes or bins have been returned
If you would like to make the deposit for your Winter Veggie CSA you can mail us a cheque made out to Takota Coen or we'll take an email money transfer from your online banking service. Please email us first so we know that payment is coming and so we can give you the password.
